Getting to Belém Tower

The tower stands at the western end of the Belém waterfront, about 6 km from downtown Lisbon. A tram, a train and a bus all get you there in under half an hour. The last few hundred metres are on foot.

Every way to Belém Tower ends with a walk: the tram and bus stop inland by the gardens, the train station is 15 to 20 minutes east along the river, and there is no stop at the tower door. Plan on 10 to 20 minutes on foot after you get off.

Fares below are Carris's 2026 prices (carris.pt). The address for maps and taxis: Torre de Belém, Avenida Brasília, 1400-038 Lisboa.

The quick answer

Fastest: the Cascais-line train from Cais do Sodré to Belém, about 7 to 10 minutes, then 15 to 20 minutes on foot west along the river. Most direct: tram 15E from Praça da Figueira, Praça do Comércio or Cais do Sodré, 25 to 30 minutes, €3.30 on board or €1.90 on a navegante card; get off at Largo da Princesa. Bus 728 runs from Santa Apolónia, handy for cruise passengers. The Lisboa Card covers all three.

What is the best way to get to Belém Tower?

The train, if you are near Cais do Sodré: 7 to 10 minutes. Tram 15E if you are in the Baixa: 25 to 30 minutes with no change. Both are covered by the Lisboa Card.

How do you take tram 15E to Belém Tower?

Board at Praça da Figueira, Praça do Comércio or Cais do Sodré, ride 25 to 30 minutes west, and get off at Largo da Princesa, the stop closest to the tower.

Tram 15E is the long modern tram, not the little yellow tram 28. It runs west along the river to Belém, where it stops at Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, then Largo da Princesa. For the tower, stay on to Largo da Princesa and walk down towards the river; for Jerónimos first, get off a stop earlier.

  • Fare: €3.30 for a ticket bought on board in 2026. On a navegante card a one-hour Carris/Metro trip costs €1.90, or €1.72 with zapping credit.
  • Crowds: it fills up between 10 am and 1 pm. Board at Praça da Figueira, the start of the line, for a seat.
  • 24-hour tickets: a Carris/Metro day ticket costs €7.25; with the CP train included, €11.40.

How do you take the train to Belém Tower?

Take a Cascais-line train from Cais do Sodré to Belém station, about 7 to 10 minutes, then walk west along the river for 15 to 20 minutes, past the Padrão.

Trains leave Cais do Sodré every 12 to 20 minutes for most of the day (timetable), and Belém is three stops out; the departure boards show which trains call there. Pay with a navegante card loaded with zapping credit, or tap the Lisboa Card at the gate. In summer the queues at the machines are long: this is the beach train.

From Belém station, cross towards the river and walk west on the promenade. The Padrão dos Descobrimentos comes first, then about 1 km more to the tower. It is the nicest approach of all: the tower grows ahead of you the whole way.

Is there a bus to Belém Tower?

Yes. Carris bus 728 runs from Santa Apolónia and Cais do Sodré along the river to Belém, stopping at Estação Fluvial Belém, Belém and Mosteiro Jerónimos. Expect about 15 minutes from Cais do Sodré.

Bus 728 is the useful one for visitors, because it starts at Santa Apolónia, next to the main cruise quays, and runs west through Cais do Sodré to Belém and on to Restelo. A ticket bought from the driver costs €2.30 in 2026; a navegante card or the Lisboa Card is cheaper. It is as slow as the tram at rush hour.

From the cruise terminals: ships at Santa Apolónia and Jardim do Tabaco are a short walk from Santa Apolónia station, where bus 728 starts. Smaller ships berth at Alcântara, further west towards the bridge, which is a short taxi ride from Belém. The hop-on hop-off bus below lists a stop at the Alcântara terminal, though cruise passengers report its stops are hard to find.

Should you take a taxi or Uber to Belém Tower?

It is the easiest door-to-door option, 15 to 25 minutes from the centre. Ask for Torre de Belém on Avenida Brasília, and don't plan on parking.

Ride-hail apps and taxis drop you on Avenida Brasília, the riverside road, a short walk from the footbridge. For the sunset sails, type the marina instead: "Doca do Bom Sucesso" for Taguscruises, "Lisbon By Boat" or Doca de Belém for the others. Drivers who are given "Avenida Brasília" drop people at the wrong pier often enough that the operators warn about it.

Driving yourself is a bad idea on a weekend: parking around the monuments fills early.

Cyclists stopped by the Padrão dos Descobrimentos on the riverfront
The Padrão, about 1 km east of the tower: most routes pass it.

How do you walk to Belém Tower from Jerónimos and the Padrão?

From the Padrão: about 1 km west along the river, 12 to 15 minutes. From Jerónimos: about 1 km, 15 minutes, through the gardens and the underpass to the river.

The two walks are flat and pleasant. From the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, keep the river on your left and follow the promenade west past the Doca do Bom Sucesso marina to the tower. From Jerónimos, cross the Praça do Império garden, take the underpass under the railway and Avenida da Índia, and turn west at the river.

From downtown, walking the whole way along the river is possible, about 6 km, but it takes well over an hour. Most people ride one way. Plan your monuments in the Jerónimos guide.

Two hours in your own tuk-tuk from your hotel: Pastéis de Belém, Jerónimos, the tower and the Padrão.

Can a bike or e-bike tour get you to Belém Tower?

Yes, as part of a guided tour: the bike tour gives you 10 minutes outside the tower, the e-bike tour 3. Neither includes entry, and two e-bike guests never reached it.

  • The bike tour from downtown to Belém (Free Bike Tours Lisbon, $18, 4.9 from 717) meets at Rua dos Caminhos de Ferro 62, near Santa Apolónia, and rides about 22 km over 4 to 5 hours, mostly flat. The $18 is the bike hire; the guide works for tips. Stops include the bridge, the Padrão, the tower for 10 minutes and MAAT. An e-bike upgrade is offered.
  • The riverside e-bike tour (Boost Portugal, $25, 4.8 from 243) leaves the Terreiro do Trigo store, includes a custard tart and coffee, and lists a 3-minute tower stop. Two 2026 guests didn't get there: one when a bike chain kept coming off, another who wrote that "You stop significantly short of Belem". Ages 12 and up, at least 1.5 m tall, up to 118 kg.
  • The private tuk-tuk picks you up at your hotel and stops 10 minutes at the tower. Children 7 and under aren't allowed.

If reaching the tower matters, book the bike tour, or ask the e-bike operator before you pay. Full comparison in Belém tours compared.

Does the hop-on hop-off bus or the Lisboa Card cover the trip?

The Lisboa Card covers tram 15E, the buses and the train, plus entry to the tower. The Yellow Bus Belém hop-on hop-off ticket includes Carris trams for 24 hours, but it rates only 3.0.

The Lisboa Card costs €31 for 24 hours (adults, 2026) and covers Carris trams and buses, the metro and the CP train to Belém, so for one day of monuments plus transport it beats paying separately. You still book a €0 slot for the tower.

The Belém hop-on hop-off bus ($25 for 24 hours) runs from Praça dos Restauradores along Avenida da Liberdade to Belém, with the tower as one stop, and includes Carris trams while the ticket is valid, tram 15E among them. Guests report hour-long waits while other companies' buses passed, broken headphones, and stops that are hard to find from the cruise terminal; the ticket covers this one line only. As a tram pass with a bus attached, it can work. As a tour, read the reviews first.
